To wax or to shave? The battle of hair removal that many of us face.
There are pros and cons to each method. The best hair removal method out of the two is dependent upon your lifestyle and personal preference.
Let’s face it, hair removal is no fun for anyone. We all hate the process, but we do love the results!
Waxing removes unwanted hair from its follicle, or as some people call it “the root”. Waxing is performed by a trained therapist for you to get the best results and have a comfortable experience. Remember home care is also key to maximise your waxing benefits.
You may have noticed that when you come into our salon, we will use different methods of wax application for your hair removal. We use strip wax or hot wax . They both have their own advantages and disadvantages depending on what area of your body is getting hair removal. Strip wax adheres to the skin and hair whereas hot wax is gentler and only adheres to the hair.
Hot wax is ideal for use over smaller and more sensitive and delicate areas of the skin. We use this type of wax usually on your bikini area, sometimes underarms and face depending on the sensitivity of the skin or thickness of the hairs. Hot wax is designed to shrink-wrap around the hair follicle, removing it from the root without pulling at the skin.
Strip wax on the other hand is ideal to use over larger areas with thicker skin and softer hairs. We use this on areas such as the legs, back, chest, arms and sometime face. Strip wax provides a speedy application with extra strong grip, no sticky residue and no skin drag.
Pros to waxing
- Hair grows back slower: The hair is being removed from the follicle which hair takes longer to regrow. Waxes can last between four to six weeks, depending on the individual’s growth cycle and thickness. Continuous waxing can result in the hair growing in finer over time.
- Stubble free: You wouldn’t have to worry about stubble like you would with shaving. Waxing removes the hair completely whereas shaving only removes hair from the top layer.
- Smoother skin: Waxing also removes dead skin cells which results in your skin feeling incredibly smooth!
Cons to waxing
- It’s painful: In reality, removing hair from the root will never be a pleasant experience. The pain level tends to decrease after continuous sessions and is something most people can endure for the benefits that waxing provides. They weren’t lying when they said “beauty hurts”!
- Requires regrowth: The hair needs to be at least ¼ of an inch for waxing or the length of a rice grain. Waiting for the hair to be long enough to effectively wax can be inconvenient. If you’re someone that likes to be completely smooth and hairless all day every day in specific areas, you’ll hate the regrowth period and may be tempted to shave. But don’t do it, put the razor blade away! If you shave in between waxes, all of the hard work and progress you’ve made from continuous waxing will be reversed. You will need to start over to get your growth cycle slower and hair growing in finer again.
- Sometimes you may experience skin irritation after a wax treatment. It could be the type of wax used that’s irritating the skin. To minimise this we use wax from wax:one which is rosin free. Rosin is an ingredient found in some wax products which some individuals can have a allergy or intolerance to. This can cause skin irritations to individuals with sensitive skin.
Overall, waxing does have great benefits with hair growth coming back slower. So if you want to avoid the constant shaving and stubble, think of having a waxing treatment. Slightly uncomfortable but smooth results!
